In Colorado, the divorce itself can not be contested. All it takes is one party to file a divorce and there is nothing the other party can do to prevent the divorce from happening. Hence, the term contested divorce does not refer to as to whether or not the divorce should take place but rather the dispute is as to the terms on which the divorce is concluded.

For example, a divorce may become contested because one or the other party is seeking maintenance (alimony), or there may be a dispute as to the parenting time each party should receive or there may be concerns regarding child abuse, whether one party or the other is fit to parent the children, or the dispute may be as to how the assets ought to be distributed, what property should be considered marital property, or even how much income each party really makes for purposes of determining child support and/or maintenance.

Such disputes are handled through discovery, investigative inquiries, asset searches, trial preparation, and legal argument. An experienced, competent attorney should be able to advise you not only as to the law and the judicial process, but also as to the investigative methods, the limits, and the likely outcomes.
